The Isle of Man was designated a UNESCO Biosphere in 2016 in recognition of its unique environment, culture, heritage, economy—and its people’s commitment to protecting and enhancing them. It remains the only entire nation in the world to hold this designation, with all land and territorial sea included.
This means that all types of economic and social activity on the Island take place within a Biosphere—offering a rare and inspiring context for innovation. It’s a place where a balanced relationship between people, the economy, and the environment isn’t just encouraged—it’s embedded in everything we do.
Your participation in the Innovation Challenge happens within this extraordinary framework, where your ideas have the potential to create lasting impact. The Biosphere Award recognises the solution that best reflects these values, delivered in partnership with the UK National Commission for UNESCO.

FAQs
Here's everything you need to know about applying, participating, and what to expect.
Applications for the 2026 Innovation Challenge will open in November 2025. Mentors will be drawn from our industry sectors from experienced and senior business representatives. We will carefully select ’buddy‘ mentors that match each finalist and those close mentors (which may be a person or a team) will assist in testing market propositions, introductions to the local network and offering general business advice.
